History of Thun Bodhiya Temple
The history of Thun Bodhiya Temple is deeply rooted in the faith, devotion, and spiritual connection of the local community. According to long-standing beliefs, this sacred place was not established by any single founder or individual. Instead, it gradually emerged as a place of worship through the collective (faith) and reverence of the people who were drawn to its spiritual significance.
The name “Thun Bodhiya” originates from the presence of three sacred Bo trees (Bodhi plants) at the site. Over time, these trees became objects of deep veneration, attracting devotees from nearby villages and distant areas alike. With strong belief in the blessings associated with the sacred place, people began visiting regularly to offer, meditate, and seek spiritual comfort, considering the place to be peaceful, sacred, and spiritually powerful.
As the years passed, many devotees shared experiences of receiving blessings, protection, peace of mind, and positive changes in their lives after worshipping at Thun Bodhiya. These heartfelt experiences strengthened the trust and devotion of the community, leading to the gradual recognition of the site as a respected Buddhist religious place.
With the continuous support and dedication of devotees and well-wishers, Thun Bodhiya began to develop into a more organized place of worship. Significant contributions were made by devoted members such as the late Mr. Somapala Hapuarachchi and Mrs. Daya Hapuarachchi, Mr. B. D. Perera, and Mr. Lional Wijewardana, along with their family members. With deep faith (Shraddha), generosity (Dana), and unwavering commitment, they took leadership in nurturing and developing this sacred site, offering their time, effort, and resources for its progress.
Through these meritorious efforts, Thun Bodhiya gradually gained island-wide recognition as a unique and spiritually significant place especially as one of the rare locations in Sri Lanka where three sacred Bo trees are present and venerated together.
Over time, with the continued offerings and support of devotees and pilgrims, the temple premises have been further beautified and improved. Today, Thun Bodhiya Temple stands not only as a place of worship but also as a center for compassion and service, actively engaging in supporting nearby temples, assisting the sick, helping underprivileged students, and extending aid to those in need.
In order to safeguard this sacred place and ensure its continued development as a Buddhist religious and social service center, the founding members took steps to establish a formal and organized institution. Accordingly, the Thun Bodhiya Trust Board was formed and officially registered as a non-profit organization under the name “Sri Bodhiraja Development Society.” This organization was legally registered at the Bandaragama Divisional Secretariat on 02nd November 2011 (Registration No: …/102).
Through this organization, all religious, social, and development activities of Thun Bodhiya are carried out with transparency, responsibility, and dedication, for the benefit of the Buddha Sasana and the wider community.
Today, Thun Bodhiya Temple stands as a lasting symbol of faith, unity, compassion, and the shared spiritual strength of generations, continuing to guide and inspire all who visit.
